BS 546:2025 Clause 10.6.2 rigid metal pin test pin (5 N test pin), model SC-B5P1062. This probe is used to verify that the earth contact of a South African (BS 546) socket-outlet cannot be touched by a rigid metal pin of 1.9 mm diameter and 60 mm length when a force of 5 N is applied. It is the South African equivalent of the 1 N / 20 N shutter probes used in IEC 60884-1 and GB/T 2099.1, but with the 5 N thrust specified by BS 546 Clause 10.6.2.
Test procedure
Insert the rigid metal pin of the probe into the earth contact of the socket-outlet under test and apply an axial thrust of 5 N. The probe shall not be able to make contact with the live parts of the socket-outlet. The probe is supplied with a spring-loaded handle and a red test lead for connection to an electrical indicator or a force gauge, so that contact with a live part can be signalled.
