Standard requirement: IEC 80601-2-89:2025 Medical electrical equipment – Part 2-89: Particular requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of medical beds for children (Clause 201.5.101 – Entrapment test TOOLS). The standard illustrates a set of entrapment test tools — a cone tool, a finger probe for mesh, a cylinder tool and a ball chain loop with spherical mass (Figure 201.103 a, b, c and e) — that are applied to the openings and gaps of a MEDICAL BED (side rails, protection panels, mattress support platform and perimeter areas) to verify that patient body parts cannot become trapped during normal use and adjustment of the bed.
Application
The finger probe for mesh (Figure 201.103b) simulates a child’s finger. It is applied to the mesh panels and woven/welded mesh side rails of a medical bed to verify that the mesh apertures do not allow finger penetration and entrapment. The probe is inserted into the mesh openings in any direction permitted by the standard; the mesh shall prevent the probe from passing through and creating a hazard.
