Standard requirement: IEC 80601-2-89:2025 Medical electrical equipment – Part 2-89: Particular requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of medical beds for children (Clause 201.5.101 – Entrapment test TOOLS). The standard illustrates a set of entrapment test tools — a cone tool, a finger probe for mesh, a cylinder tool and a ball chain loop with spherical mass (Figure 201.103 a, b, c and e) — that are applied to the openings and gaps of a MEDICAL BED (side rails, protection panels, mattress support platform and perimeter areas) to verify that patient body parts cannot become trapped during normal use and adjustment of the bed.

Application

The ball chain loop with spherical mass (Figure 201.103e) is used to verify entrapment and retention hazards related to loops and spherical body positions: the spherical mass represents the patient’s head or another rounded body part, and the ball chain loop represents a cord or chain that could become caught. The assembly is applied to the openings of the medical bed to check that the loop and the spherical mass cannot create an entrapment hazard.
