Standard requirement: IEC 80601-2-89:2025 Medical electrical equipment – Part 2-89: Particular requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of medical beds for children (Clause 201.5.101 – Entrapment test TOOLS). The standard illustrates a set of entrapment test tools — a cone tool, a finger probe for mesh, a cylinder tool and a ball chain loop with spherical mass (Figure 201.103 a, b, c and e) — that are applied to the openings and gaps of a MEDICAL BED (side rails, protection panels, mattress support platform and perimeter areas) to verify that patient body parts cannot become trapped during normal use and adjustment of the bed.
Application
The cone tool (Figure 201.103a) is inserted apex first into every opening, gap and clearance of the medical bed in any intended operating position. It verifies that openings of side rails, protection panels and the mattress support platform do not permit encroachment of patient body parts, i.e. that the cone cannot penetrate far enough to create an entrapment hazard for a child patient.
