SANS 164-1:2019 Annex A (normative) gauge for the distance from the engagement face to the current-carrying contact tubes, model SC-S164A-15A, for South African 15 A socket-outlets (SANS 164-1 / BS 546 system). If that distance is too small, a plug pin reaches live parts before the plug is fully engaged and protection against electric shock fails.
Construction: a Ø12.0 ± 0.5 mm stop head and a Ø7.1 mm (+0 / -0.05) measuring pin with a 11.2 mm (+0 / -0.05) metal length and sharp corners of R 0.2 mm max. With the head resting on the engagement face, the pin tip stands at the minimum depth permitted by the standard.
Test procedure: remove the shutters and insert the gauge as far as possible into the guidance hole so that the Ø12 head touches the engagement face, then move the gauge around the periphery of the hole. It shall not make contact with the contact tube. Contact is indicated by a lamp connected between the gauge and the appropriate contact tube, the circuit voltage being between 12 V and 24 V a.c. or d.c.

- Ø12.0 ± 0.5 mm stop head, knurled or flattened for rotating and holding
- Rear terminal for the red test lead of the indicator lamp circuit
- Body stamp: SANS 164-1 Annex A plus serial number
